How to Make Temperature Sensor Circuit using Thermistor?

Most of electronics students and hobbyists asking that How to make temperature sensor circuit, so stay tune, this post is all about making temperature sensor circuit. Temperature sensor circuit is an electronic circuit, which is designed to measure temperature of an object, device or the atmosphere. It is used to measure the temperature solids, liquids and gases. It is widely used in many industries. But you can make and use it in electronic devices and home appliances, like Fans, Exhaust Fans etc. If you use it in fan, exhaust fan or air cooler present in your room, when the temperature of your room increases the fan, This temperature sensor circuit will turn ON the fan, exhaust fan or air cooler automatically. And when the temperature of your room decreases, This circuit will turn OFF your fan, exhaust fan or air cooler automatically. This is the best electronic project for electronics students and electronics hobbyists. To make this temperature sensor circuit, the below electronic components you will need.

  • Red LED, you can also use any other color of LED but red LED is more suitable for this temperature sensor circuit.
  • 1KΩ Resistor, this resistor we will use on the negative side of thermistor.
  • 220Ω Resistor, This resistor we will use for LED. You can use any resistor value from 220Ω to 600Ω, when you use a 9 volt battery for operating this circuit. And when you use 12 volt battery then you should use 1KΩ resistor.
  • 10KΩ Potentiometer, this potentiometer is used in this circuit for changing the sensitivity of the circuit.
  • 8 pin IC base. This IC base is optional. We use it here for LM358 IC. You can also use this IC without IC base.
  • LM358 IC. This IC is the main component of this circuit.
  • Thermistor. You can find it in an old laptop battery.
  • BC547 Transistor.
  • Connector pin.
  • 9 volt battery connector.
  • And 9 volt battery.

Circuit diagram of temperature sensor circuit

How to make temperature sensor circuit

The above is the circuit diagram of temperature sensor circuit. The circuit diagram of this project is simple and easy to understand for everyone, especially for electronics students and hobbyists. There are only a few electronic components used in this project and all these electronic components are easy to find in the local electronic components market. If you can't find the electronic components in your local market, you can also buy them online. The below are the links for each electronic components, if you want to buy any one click on the link of the particular electronic component. This will redirect you to Amazon and there you can buy.

You can use any type or any color of LED, any one you can have. But you should have to change the resistor for LED. In the circuit diagram I used 1KΩ resistor for LED with 9V DC power supply. If you want the LED brighter, you should decrease the value of resistor up to 220Ω. And if you use a 12V DC power supply, then 1KΩ resistor is OK.

You can also use a buzzer instead of LED or use both LED and buzzer. If you use a 12V Busser then don't use resistor for the buzzer. If you want to control any device or home appliances like Fan or Exhaust Fan using this Temperature Sensor Circuit, then you can use a 12V relay instead of buzzer or LED or even you can use either. When temperature of the environment reached to a specific point you fix in the circuit, the circuit will turned ON and when the circuit is turned ON, It will ON the relay. And when the relay is turned ON, it will ON or OFF your device, or perform a specific function in your device.

To control the sensitivity of the circuit, I used a potentiometer in this circuit. Potentiometer is also called Variable Resistor. It allows the circuit to be made the circuit more or less sensitive by using the position of the screw in the potentiometer. It can increase or decrease the resistance so you can easily change the sensitivity of the temperature sensor circuit by changing the position of the potentiometer.

To assemble all these electronic components, you will need a small piece of zero or blank PCB. Insert all the above mentioned required electronic components into the PCB one by one according to the circuit diagram show with this post. And solder all these electronic components using solder wire and solder iron. And use a 9V battery to operate this circuit.

You can also make this circuit without PCB, you just solder all the required electronic component to each other using solder iron. You shout use the third hand for this purpose. Firm the LM358 IC into the third hand and solder the remaining electronic components with it.

Another way of making this circuit is to make it on the breadboard. This is the easiest way of making any electronic circuit. For this purpose, besides the required electronic components you will a breadboard and jumper wires. And if you want to make this project on the PCB or solder the components without PCB, it is good to use breadboard and jumper wire to test your circuit before permanently solder it together. Breadboards and jumper wires are easily available components in the local market and if you don’t find, click the links Breadboard and Jumper wires to buy online.
